TRESTLE is a studio for architecture and research based between Ireland and London. We define architecture as landscapes, cities, buildings, rooms and objects. Our practice creates highly situated work across these scales.

TRESTLE was founded by Tom Cookson and Sarah Carroll.

Tom Cookson (BAHons/BArch/RIAI) is a Design Fellow at University College Dublin, and leads a fourth year design studio at the Cork Centre for Architectural Education. He has taught and been a guest critic at a range of schools in the UK and Ireland. Prior to establishing TRESTLE, Tom was an Associate at Hall McKnight. He led the London studio and a range of significant international projects over the course of 10 years. Tom’s book, Shallow Time was co-published in 2023 by DPR Barcelona and the IAF. His writing has also been published by Drawing Matter. Tom was shortlisted for the RIBA Silver Medal for his Masters thesis.

Sarah Carroll (BScHons/MArch/RIAI) is an architect and lecturer at the Cork Centre for Architectural Education. Sarah worked extensively in London, with Níall McLaughlin Architects and Hall McKnight. In 2021, Sarah moved back to Ireland as a founding staff member of the Hall McKnight Cork office and Project Architect leading social housing and cultural projects in Galway and Dublin. Sarah graduated first in her class at undergraduate level at University College Dublin and with First Class Honours from the Master of Architecture programme. She studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 2015 and was awarded the AAI Maurice Craig Commendation for her Masters thesis in 2016.
