Building Societies: London

A gilded room, a bank vault, a dark room glowing in golden light, a sensory experience celebrating the physical artefacts of the banking system. A space lined in fabric which is redolent of domestic and civic environments: curtains, table clothes, garments. Elevated vitrines orbit the primary bank façade, holding delicate golden facsimiles of international banking institutions, forging connections beyond the Irish context. The theme of gold acts as a thread questioning the prior currency of banking institutions and their role in society in this digital age.

Our exhibition proposal for the London Design Biennale celebrates the physical artefacts of the high street banking model, and considers their future relevance and purpose.
